About Donald M. Kaesser, Ph.D.

I see individual Adults and Couples. I use Existential, Gestalt, Cognitive-Behavioral, Logotherapy and ' brain-based' approaches with relationship issues, anxiety, depression, sexuality difficulties, chemical dependency, and addictions.

I have been a licensed psychologist and counselor/psychotherapist providing direct clinical services for 30 years. My goals are to help people in addressing issues that have become obstacles in their lives and to help them meet their goals in the context of an honest, caring, and direct co-created professional relationship. Individual therapy, couples/relationship issues, substance abuse issues, depression, anxiety, grief, aging, sexuality issues as well as sexual orientation issues, and family matters are among the range of aspects of people's lives with which I effectively work. Counseling or therapy may be briefer and problem-oriented or involve an extended therapy relationship depending on your needs. I also provide psychological testing, including career interest testing, personality inventories, and whatever is needed to help in understanding your process and how it may be blocking and/or aiding your goals in life. When appropriate, I consult with other psychologists, social workers or mental health counselors within the building or in the community to more fully understand and meet my client's needs. I received my PhD. in Counseling Psychology from Iowa State University where I studied process dimensions in psychotherapy under Dr. Frederic Borgen, for my Ph.D. dissertation. I obtained Board Certification from the American Psychological Association's College of Professional Psychology for the treatment of substance use disorders with additional training in Existential, Gestalt, Cognitive-Behavioral, and Logotheraputic approaches to my work. My work with you would likely be an eclectic blend of cognitive-behavioral, existential and Humanistic positions. Prior to becoming a psychologist I taught psychology full-time at DMACC for15 years and prior to that I was trained as a chemist and worked at Lever Brothers in St. Louis, MO as a Control Chemist until I entered the US Army in1968 and served overseas.

In addition to working with individuals ages 18 and older, couples and families, I also work with veterans of the armed forces and with seniors. Additionally, I have worked with businesses as a workshop facilitator.

I am a life long learner and continue to do ongoing study and reading/workshops ala Psychotherapy; particularly in Interpersonal Neurobiology (Daniel J. Siegel, MD & Rick Hanson, PhD) and other Mind/Body or Body/Mind (bottom up vs top down) approaches such as EMDR (Francine Shapiro,PhD), Sensory Motor Psychotherapy (Pat Ogden, PhD), Somatic Experiencing (Peter A. Levine, PhD), Poly Vagal Theory (Steven W. Porges, PhD) and Trauma/PTSD treatments (Bessel A. van der Kolk, MD).

I am trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy(SP) (Level 1) (Dr. Pat Ogden), EMDR and/or taking or going to classes/workshops in The Sexual Crucible/Passionate Marriage (SC/PM) approach...[a differentiation based marital therapy approach] from Drs. David Schnarch & Ruth Morehouse with the intention of obtaining the highest level of certification offered in both SP & SC/PM.

While not yet a member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASSET), I have successfully completed 58+ credits/hours of AASECT-approved clinical workshop training during the current year and plan on attending additional training/certification in the Crucible (Registered Trade Mark) approach to differentiated based couples/sexuality therapy.

I am a 2022-2023 Fellow at the Integrative Psychiatry Institute (IPI)

Additionally I am a FULL member of The American Academy of Psychotherapists (AAP).

I am a full member of The American Psychological Association (APA).

I am a Lifetime Member of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy
